LEECHBURG, Pa. (AP) - Police are investigating after a member of the Leechburg Area school board received a “blackmail” letter related to a probe looking into alleged hazing on the boys’ varsity basketball team.

Law enforcement officials say a handwritten envelope postmarked Feb. 11 included threats against the unidentified board member if head basketball coach Damian Davies is terminated as a result of the ongoing investigation.

Police Chief Michael Diebold says the perpetrator could face a charge of intimidation of a public official if they are found.

Police and school investigators launched the hazing investigation last month after a parent contacted a state child abuse hotline. Diebold says the information already collected by investigators has provided validity to the allegations.

Police say five students were implicated, with three receiving suspensions from the school.
