PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland Mayor Charlie Hales says city and Multnomah County leaders are working together on a proposal that would put the county in charge of Portland’s homeless services.

The Oregonian reports (https://goo.gl/uLKvAz ) that Hales says the proposed transition calls for Portland to take charge of affordable housing projects while the county handles homeless services. He says Commissioner Dan Saltzman is leading the transition.

If the plan is approved, it would make way for the creation of a Joint City-County Office of Homeless Services. A letter outlining the proposal says staff would report to Multnomah County Chairwoman Deborah Kafoury.

The proposal comes as a result of discussions with a city-county coalition called A Home For Everyone.
