TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Ohio prison officials say an inmate has died five days after he was found hanging in his cell.

Lawrence Fitzgerald James was serving a life sentence at the Toledo Correctional Institution for killing a college student in 2010.

Prison officials say James died Wednesday at a hospital where he’d been in custody.

A prison spokeswoman says he was found hanging in an apparent suicide attempt on Feb. 12. The official cause of death hasn’t been released.

The Blade (https://bit.ly/1KvwKM4 ) newspaper in Toledo reports James was sentenced to life in prison in 2011 in the stabbing death of a University of Toledo student.

James told police that he stabbed the man after asking him for 35 cents and a cigarette.
