RIALTO, Calif. (AP) - San Bernardino prosecutors say a Rialto police officer was justified when he shot and wounded a man who reached for a rifle during a traffic stop two years ago.

The Sun newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1Qqlblu) the District Attorney’s office said Thursday that Officer Justin Breen acted in self-defense when he opened fire after the driver attempted to draw the rifle from the back seat.

The driver, 34-year-old Darnell White, dropped the rifle and ran into a nearby home. SWAT members searched the home for White but were unable to find him. He was later located hiding in a relative’s home in Banning.

White pleaded guilty to charges including exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a peace officer. He was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in state prison.
