LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A grand jury has indicted a Sunland Park man who’s accused of holding some of his family members hostage with a knife late last year.

Prosecutors say 18-year-old Rafael Cervantes is facing 20 felony counts including one count of kidnapping.

He’s also been indicted on child abuse, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer.

According to investigators, Cervantes was using a knife to a hold a woman and a young child hostage inside a vehicle on Dec. 27.

When Sunland Park police arrived, the defendant refused to surrender and allegedly attempted to flee before he was shot and wounded.

Authorities earlier this week announced that the shooting was justified and cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.
