NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended a search for a missing swimmer off the coast of Narragansett.

The Coast Guard began searching after a report of a person in the water Thursday night.

WPRI-TV reported that police believe the man is 61-year-old Peter Butler and that luggage containing Butler’s passport was found at the scene.

Police said two girls saw what they thought was a man swimming off the Hazards Rocks around 4 p.m. Thursday.

They said a man using Butler’s passport checked out of the Best Western in Warwick earlier in Thursday and entered a taxi that dropped him off on Hazard Avenue in Narragansett.

Police said Friday they’ve been unable to locate Butler.

The Rhode Island State Police, Department of Environmental Management and local police and firefighters assisted in the search.
