CRYSTAL CITY, Texas (AP) - A South Texas town rocked by political scandal is telling its residents to boil their water or buy it in bottles after foul, dark-colored water began streaming from their taps.

Officials in Crystal City, about 115 miles southwest of San Antonio, say the municipal water tank was flushed Wednesday as part of renovation efforts.

Sediment that over time had collected at the bottom of the tank ran through distribution lines and into homes. Residents also are reporting poor water pressure.

Officials say they didn’t expect sediment to course through the distribution lines.

The problem began a day after the town’s mayor was accused of disrupting a City Council meeting while fighting a recall effort that began before his indictment in a public corruption investigation that also has ensnarled most of the council.
