REEDLEY, Calif. (AP) - Officials say three California Conservation Corps crew members en route to a water conservation turf removal project were killed in a car crash near Reedley.

The Governor’s office says they are 21-year-old Justin Vanmeter, 20-year-old Rhonda Shackelford and 18-year-old Serena Guadarrama.

The office says a supervisor and two other crew members were hospitalized after the Tuesday accident.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Axel Reyes tells the Fresno Bee (https://bit.ly/1P52nL9) the van the group was riding stopped at an intersection but then pulled in front of a big rig pulling two trailers and was broadsided.

Reyes says the big rig driver was not injured.

Gov. Jerry Brown extended condolences to the families of the three corps members who were killed and said Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff in their honor.
