SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have arrested 13 people after a panga boat near Santa Barbara was found to be carrying about 3,000 pounds of marijuana.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1SVIDxe ) that the U.S. Coast Guard spotted the boat Saturday at Arroyo Quemada Beach, west of Santa Barbara. Three people were on the boat and others were on shore, helping unload more than 100 bales of marijuana into vehicles.

Panga boats are medium-sized, open fishing vessels.

U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker said in a statement after the arrests that she is focused on combatting panga boat drug smuggling, which she says is dangerous to both the smugglers and authorities looking for the boats.
