ROME, N.Y. (AP) - An 18-year-old central New York man has pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the shooting death of a 7-month-old boy.

Henry Bartle of Rome made the plea Monday in Oneida County Court and could serve from one-and-a-third to four years in prison for the death of Nathaniel Hitt.

Bartle was under the influence of marijuana while cleaning a shotgun in his apartment in November and said he forgot he had loaded the gun when it discharged accidentally and killed the infant.

The boy’s mother was Bartle’s fiancée.

Bartle is eligible to be sentenced as a youthful offender because of his age. That means the charges could be removed from his record once his time is served.
