PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona media outlets are fighting to keep court documents filed in the case against a man charged in some of the metro Phoenix freeway shootings from being sealed.

The Arizona Republic reports (https://bit.ly/1Q9Xtu0 ) that the newspaper and six other outlets on Monday asked a Maricopa County Superior Court judge for permission to intervene in the criminal case against 21-year-old Leslie Allen Merritt Jr.

Prosecutors last week asked the judge to seal court documents to prevent pretrial media dissection. The media groups argue that there are not compelling reasons to justify sealing the documents.

Merritt was arrested in September after authorities say they used ballistic tests to tie Merritt to four of the 11 shootings that occurred on freeways last summer.
