SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - One person is dead after her vehicle was broadsided by a Volkswagen that Utah authorities say had recently been carjacked.

Kaysville Police Lt. Kenton Pies says a Mazda 6 was carjacked in Kaysville and later stopped on Interstate 15. According to Pies, a Unified Police Officer stopped to help the man and woman with the Mazda and the man told him it was out of gas.

The officer grew suspicious and called for more information. Pies says the officer was on the phone when the man managed to carjack a Volkswagen that stopped. The Volkswagen’s original driver jumped out.

Pies says the Volkswagen took a Centerville exit ramp and hit a car, killing the woman inside.

He says the carjacker was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

The woman near the Mazda was questioned and arrested.
