ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Rapides Parish police jurors have voted to oppose a company’s request to increase the amount of waste it openly burns.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/1nCW4oR ) jurors voted unanimously Monday against Clean Harbors Colfax’s permit request.

John Martel, co-chairman of the Central Louisiana Coalition for A Safe and Healthy Environment, says increasing open burning could pose health dangers to residents within a 40-mile radius of the Grant Parish site.

Clean Harbors Colfax has requested a “permit modification” from the state Department of Environmental Quality to allow it to increase the annual amount of net explosive weight that it burns from about 500,000 pounds to over 2 million pounds.

Phillip Retallick, spokesman for Clean Harbors, the Massachusetts-based parent company, says the firm disagrees with health-threat claims made by opponents of open burning.
