MILWAUKEE (AP) - Thousands of students across Wisconsin have the day off because travel conditions are expected to deteriorate as a strong winter storm bears down on the state.

Heavy snow spreads in from the south Tuesday morning accompanied by gusty winds. More than a dozen Wisconsin counties are under a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service.

Many school districts decided it would be better to keep children at home, including Beaver Dam, Cassville, Columbus, Boscobel, Cambria-Friesland, Green Lake, Mayville, Mauston and Portage.

A mixture of snow, sleet and rain is expected in southeastern Wisconsin. Forecasters say the best chance for all snow will be northwest of Madison with more than 10 inches of snow predicted for the Wisconsin Dells area.
