WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - Prosecutors have told a northeastern Pennsylvania jury that a woman shot and killed her boyfriend because she was used to having control over him and felt herself losing that power.

Opening statements were delivered Tuesday in the Luzerne County trial of 32-year-old Jessica Alinsky of Shenandoah in the September 2011 slaying of 34-year-old Matthew Gailie at the couple’s Hazle Township home.

Alinsky has maintained that he shot himself during a dispute. Prosecutors allege that she staged the crime scene to make it appear that Gailie shot himself.

Defense attorney Demetrius Fannick said the couple had a volatile relationship and an argument escalated that night, but after the shooting she begged a 911 operator to save Gailie’s life. Fannick said she “didn’t want him to die. She wanted him to live.”
