SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a woman was found dead inside a vehicle that plunged about 300 feet off a cliff near Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://sfchron.cl/1LDvZvu) officials recovered the body of the 46-year-old driver from the wrecked car, which crashed Monday onto a beach north of Scott Creek. Authorities did not immediately know if the woman was killed in the fall or why the car sped off the cliff.

California Highway Patrol Officer Trista Drake says a witness reported hearing the car accelerate shortly before speeding off the cliff.

The CHP and Santa Cruz Fire Department responded and took about two hours to reach the body. They were working to extract the mangled car from the shore below.
