In a story Feb. 20, The Associated Press reported that in an audio recording of the El Faro captain’s final call for help, he referred to water flooding into “three holds” of the freighter before it sank. The recording of the captain’s statements is not clear and was played during an investigative hearing with no transcript. Coast Guard officials subsequently reviewed the recording and now believe the captain said water was flooding into his “three hold,” or hold No. 3.
