SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A solar factory in Salem is laying off more than one-third of its workforce due to a drop in demand for solar panels.

The Statesman Journal reports (https://is.gd/H9KdIf ) that Panasonic Eco Solutions Solar America LLC, formerly known as Sanyo Solar of Oregon LLC, is laying off 50 people effective April 15. The company manufactures silicon ingots for solar cells.

Panasonic spokesman Jim Reilly says the layoffs are because of a decrease in demand from the Japan market. He says the company will continue with lower targets until demand recovers.

About 85 workers remain at the facility.
