LOS ANGELES (AP) - Powerful winds and high surf are accompanying summerlike temperatures as Southern California sweats through another mid-winter heat wave.

Swimmers and surfers are urged to avoid the water in Los Angeles County, where a beach hazards statement is in effect Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says dangerous rip currents and minor beach erosion is possible as big waves pound the coast.

Meanwhile a wind advisory is in place for some mountain areas where gusts topping 45 mph are expected.

Forecasters say temperatures could hit the mid-80s in parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The warming trend is expected to continue for much of the week.
