DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Polk County jury awarded three women $422,784 after a Des Moines police officer drove his squad car through an intersection and struck their car.

The Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/1LGz7qu ) reports the lawsuit, filed on behalf of Kaileigh Joiner, E’Shayla Kelson and Marshee Jones, went to trial Feb. 15, nearly three years after the April 2013 crash.

Online court records say the verdict was filed Feb. 18.

Officer Mitchell Lee allegedly drove through a red light without his emergency lights or sirens on, striking the vehicle.

Defense attorney Peter Berger said the women suffered headaches and back pains linked to the collision. He said two of the women developed signs of post-traumatic arthritis.

The city’s attorney would not discuss specifics about whether or not the city will appeal.
