RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A hangar lease deal will give Richmond International Airport its second aircraft maintenance facility, and may bring new jobs to the area.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1QDDSbS) the Capital Region Airport Commission approved Tuesday the lease with Piedmont Airlines. The lease starts June 1 and will require a nearly $1.3 million renovation of what the airport calls its “WADS” hangar. Piedmont will pay over $150,000 per year for the hangar.
Piedmont, a regional airline that connects small cities to American Airlines hubs, is acquiring 20 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft over the next year and a half and will use Richmond as a service area for the jets.
Piedmont spokeswoman Jacqueline Jennings says the airline expects to hire up to two dozen aircraft mechanics and support staff for the maintenance facility.
