JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Jonesboro police officials say even with the addition of seven new officers to the department, the agency still has eight more positions to fill.

Seven new officers took oaths of service on Friday, and that group was the first to graduate from the department’s in-house training academy.

A police spokesman says the eight vacancies need to be filled, especially with two officers on military leave and two more on medical leave.

Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott says the department will begin testing for its newest round of hires early next month. He says he hopes another academy will provide enough officers to make up for the manpower shortage.
