DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - The state highway department is putting up a concrete barrier on U.S. Highway 550 south of Durango where a large slab of rock broke away from the mountainside and landed on the road earlier this month.

The Durango Herald reports (https://tinyurl.com/zqgh9yu ) the concrete barrier will block off what remains of an estimated 700 tons of rock that has been pushed against the hillside to reinforce it.

Drivers are being warned to expect single-lane, alternating traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday during construction.

The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to leave the rock along the side of the highway until later this year when it can be hauled away.
