COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A restaurant owner charged with murder after authorities say he shot and killed his wife’s lover has been released from jail on a $100,000 bond on a federal weapons charge.

The State newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1oGbyc9 ) that Gregorio Leon’s lawyers argued in court Friday he was safer out of jail than inside jail because the man he is charged with killing was a member of a Mexican drug cartel and other members may want to kill him.

Investigators say Leon confronted and killed 28-year-old Arturo Santos on Valentine’s Day as he sat in a vehicle in Lexington with Leon’s wife.

Leon also made a $500,000 bond on the state murder charge. He told the judge he would follow those requirements including wearing an ankle monitor and not contacting his wife.
