AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Gov. Paul LePage’s spokesman says his boss is supporting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in part because Trump is “reaching out to governors.”

LePage spokesman Peter Steele says the Republican governor also endorsed Trump because they both have business backgrounds and “came from outside the political establishment.”

LePage endorsed Trump on Friday, the same day New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie threw his support behind the GOP front-runner. LePage had supported Christie’s presidential bid before Christie exited the race.

The New York Times says in a story Saturday that LePage just a week ago was highly critical of Trump during a meeting of Republican governors.

Steele says LePage first wanted to see a governor become the nominee, “but the American people decided not to support the Governors in the race.”
