PHILADELPHIA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a New York man who had been accused of severely injuring his girlfriend’s six-week-old baby has been arrested on a murder charge after the child died of his injuries.

State police say the baby, Benjamin Jones, died Saturday at a hospital in Syracuse.

Troopers had rushed the boy to the hospital after responding to a home Thursday in the Jefferson County village of Philadelphia and finding he wasn’t breathing and bleeding from the nose. Police say the baby had suffered head trauma and a severe brain injury.

Twenty-three-year-old Jeremiah Garnett, who was watching the baby, was arrested Thursday on assault and child endangerment charges.

State police said Garnett was arrested on a murder charge after the baby died Saturday. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has a lawyer.
