Many states had to borrow money from the federal government to pay jobless benefits after the recession that began in 2008 because their state unemployment insurance trust funds ran short. To recoup the money, the federal government temporarily raised taxes on employers in some of those states.

A look at the maximum amount of money states owed to the federal government to repay loans for unemployment benefits, the date of the debt’s high point and the current amount of money still owed.
