FALLSTON, N.C. (AP) - Two people have died after a pickup truck hit a propane tank at their home in Cleveland County.

Officials told local media outlets that the tank exploded in flames around 10:30 p.m. Sunday and started a fire in the home in Fallston, in the grass nearby and the roof of a nearby home.

Officials said a husband and wife in the home died from injuries in the explosion. The victims were 74-year-old Johnie Newton and 76-year-old Naomi Newton.

The truck driver was taken to a hospital. Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Gordon said 24-year-old Thomas J. Pruitt of Kings Mountain did not have life-threatening injuries.

Troopers are investigating why Pruitt’s truck ran off the road.
