FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Officials at Cape Fear Valley Health are placing restrictions on visitors to its hospitals in response to a rise in the number of flu cases.

Local media outlets report the system says children under 12 years old are prohibited from visiting friends and loved ones at all of the health system’s hospitals. The measure also limits the number of visitors that can accompany patients inside Cape Fear Valley Medical Center’s emergency department.

The restrictions extend to Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center and Behavioral Health Care.

In its statement, the system said it would lift the policy when flu cases decrease.

The hospital said the restrictions come more than a month after Cape Fear Valley reported 26 flu cases since October, a significant contrast from the 707 cases treated last season.
