ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal has ordered flags at the state Capitol lowered to half-staff this weekend to honor a Georgia lawmaker who died last week.

State Rep. Bob Bryant, a Democrat from Garden City, died Thursday at a Savannah hospital. He represented the Savannah area for 12 years as a member of the state House.

Deal said in an executive order Monday that Bryant was a “dedicated public servant.” Deal’s order calls for flags to be lowered Saturday, the day Bryant is scheduled to be buried.

Bryant was 71. He served 20 years in the Army and was a retired Savannah municipal worker when he was elected to the House in 2004.

Deal also ordered that a special election for Bryant’s House seat be held on March 29.
