SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Democrat Vaughn Cook has officially announced he’s running for governor, saying that having more Democrats in the race will show Utah residents that Republicans aren’t the only ones who can represent their values.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1QoBJLD ) that Cook, a former Utah County Democratic Party chairman, is gathering signatures to earn a spot on the primary election ballot. His announcement Monday puts him alongside Mike Weinholtz, the other Democrat in the race.

Cook says his family’s long history in Utah and his association with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gives him an advantage over Weinholtz.

Weinholtz says Cook is welcome to the race and that he’s looking forward to the debate.

Cook says his campaign will focus on improving education, personal prosperity and health care.
