BEACON, N.Y. (AP) - The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater has named a long-time staffer as interim executive director five weeks after the environmental advocacy group said it was facing financial difficulties.

The Beacon-based nonprofit organization says Monday that Dave Conover will take over for former executive director Peter Gross, who resigned Jan. 27. The resignation came a week after Gross said the Clearwater group was cancelling its annual music festival this year amid money woes.

Conover has worked in several positions since joining the organization in 1991. He has been the education director since 2007.

Clearwater officials said a search for a permanent executive director will be launched.

The 106-foot Clearwater is the flagship and floating ecological classroom for the group founded in 1969 by the late folk singer Pete Seeger. The vessel is undergoing a $850,000 hull restoration.
