HOCKESSIN, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police say a man was hit and killed by a vehicle that fled the scene in Hockessin.

Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale says the crash was reported Sunday night on Lancaster Pike.

Police said in a press release Monday that 34-year-old Jeremiah McCarthy of Hockessin was trying to cross the road when he was hit by a northbound vehicle that fled the scene.

Police say McCarthy was thrown to the shoulder and pronounced dead at the scene. Police say McCarthy was not crossing at a designated crosswalk and it is not clear whether alcohol or drug use contributed to the crash.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating.
