ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - An 18-year-old man ignored police commands to drop a pistol before he was fatally shot by Roanoke County officers, police said Monday.

Police said the weapon they recovered from Kionte DeShaun Spencer after the deadly encounter Friday night was a BB gun.

Roanoke County Police Chief Howard Hall told The Roanoke Times (https://bit.ly/1plmGM9) officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. He declined to say how many officers were involved.

Spencer was black. A spokeswoman for Roanoke County, Amy Whittaker, declined a request by The Associated Press to identify the officers by race.

The shooting followed a 911 call reporting an armed man with a bandanna over his face seen walking in a drug store parking lot.

The Roanoke Times said several witnesses told the newspaper they saw a man waving a gun around.

“He was waving it at cars, and he turned around and waved it at me,” said Thomas Gill, who was pulling out of a supermarket parking lot near the drug store.

Hall said an officer who responded to the scene reported seeing a weapon in Spencer’s hand. He did not comply with a command to drop the weapon and was shot when he turned around, the chief said.

An officer twice used his stun gun on Spencer, but it was ineffective, Hall said.

“Our officers responded within their training,” he said.

Spencer, a high school student, was shot in the hip and in the collarbone. He died Friday night at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

On Monday, Hall showed stills from dash-cam video in the police cars, and the images showed what appeared to be a weapon in Spencer’s right hand, the Times reported.

The Roanoke County Police Department is conducting a criminal and internal investigation.
