PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say the death of an Arizona prison inmate is being investigated as a suspected homicide.

Arizona Department of Corrections officials say prison staff attempted life-saving measures after 42-year-old Toby Montoya was found unresponsive at his assigned housing location Monday.

Responding paramedics pronounced Montoya dead about 11 a.m.

Investigators with DOC’s Criminal Investigations Unit say they have reason to believe Montoya died as a result of injuries he received during an assault by another inmate.

Montoya recently returned to custody to serve an eight-year sentence out of Maricopa County for two counts of misconduct involving weapons.

He was housed at the Stiner Unit at Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis.
