PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - Two top officials in the Pensacola Fire Department have been placed on administrative leave, pending an ongoing investigation.

The Pensacola News Journal (https://on.pnj.com/1o5HPcJ ) reports Fire Chief Matt Schmitt and Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Glover were placed on leave Tuesday but officials offered few details about the investigation.

Pensacola spokesman Vernon Stewart says the investigation would be handled “by an outside organization.”

He says the decision to put the officials on leave came from “city hall management.”

Fire Marshal Dave Allen has been named interim chief.

Mayor Ashton Hayward told the newspaper he couldn’t comment on the investigation and didn’t know when more details would be available.

Schmitt joined the department in 1979 and was appointed interim chief in 2010.
