BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport wants to increase parking fees by $2 in order to pay for $5 million in upgrades to its parking garage.

The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1P5hkNc ) reports the airport commission approved the increase Tuesday and it will now go to the East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council for approval.

If approved, rates would increase from $10 to $12 a day for garage parking and from $7 to $9 a day for lot parking.

The hikes would go into effect April 1. The money would then be used to create more structural stability and to add more lighting to the garage. The structure is the first of three airport garages travelers enter when they go into the airport’s parking options. Additional money would be used to waterproof the structure.

“The lighting is really going to be something we needed, I think, for a safety factor,” said airport commissioner James Dodds, an architect. “Structurally, it’s an aged garage.”

Baton Rouge airport director Anthony Marino said that even with the hikes, prices at the airport would still be lower than those at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. The New Orleans airport currently charges 18.50 for short-term parking and $15 for long-term parking.

Airport officials also hope to create a surplus from any money left over for future parking improvements.
