MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Clarksville man has been sent to prison for forgery in Mason City.

Twenty-nine-year-old Matthew Merrick was sentenced to five years in prison at a hearing Monday. He’d pleaded guilty in December to one felony count and one misdemeanor count.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1PRv9MH ) that court documents say Merrick opened a checking account in the name of another person and then wrote checks on it, forging the person’s signature. The records say he also fraudulently signed a cellphone contract in the name of another person.
