BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Former U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s 23-year-old son faces a child cruelty charge following his 2-year-old child’s treatment at a hospital for bruises and scratches.

An East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office report says Frank Conner Snellings was arrested Sunday after deputies responded to a disturbance complaint at the home of the child’s mother.

The mother told deputies that she noticed scratches on the boy’s shirtless body when Snellings showed up at her home, a day after she last saw her son. The report says Snellings appeared to be intoxicated.

The report says Snellings told investigators he never struck the child but couldn’t explain what caused the scratches and bruises.

Snellings’ lawyer, Carl Babin, calls the allegations a “private matter.”

Landrieu served three Senate terms before losing a re-election bid in 2014.
