NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a man hanged himself with a T-shirt in a New York Police Department holding cell over the weekend.

The city’s medical examiner’s office identified the man on Monday as 28-year-old Serge Duthley and ruled his death a suicide.

Police say Duthley was arrested Sunday afternoon for drunken-driving after crashing his vehicle into a parked car about four blocks from his Brooklyn home.

Officials say an initial investigation found that he was found hanged in a holding cell inside the NYPD’s 69th precinct Sunday evening. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials say NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating.

A family member at Duthley’s home declined to comment.

The New York Times reports three people have been found hanged in city holding cells since May.
