RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Top Virginia lawmakers are supporting $46 million in new grants to help Newport News Shipbuilding win contracts to replace the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class nuclear submarines.

The Daily Press reports (https://bit.ly/1PeG0AJ ) legislative leaders support a bill that would give the shipbuilder $46 million if it created at least 1,000 new full-time jobs that pay above the average wage in Newport News.

Newport News Shipbuilding would also have to invest $750 million of its own money by 2024 and build a new production facility.

The bill is sponsored by House Appropriations Chairman Del. S. Chris Jones and has the support of Senate Majority Leader Sen. Tommy Norment, both Republicans.
