ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man accused of beating his mother to death inside the home they shared has been convicted of murder.

Union County prosecutors say John Quackenbush faces a possible life term when he’s sentenced March 18.

The 47-year-old Plainfield man was also convicted on two weapons counts and a theft charge in the death of 69-year-old Gail Vandewalle, Police found her body under a blanket when they went to the home in February 2013 to check on her welfare.

Quackenbush was arrested the next day at a motel in nearby Green Brook. A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

An autopsy determined that Vandewalle died of blunt-force trauma to the head caused by a 12-pound dumbbell.
