HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Jahad Thomas scored 21 points, and his layup with two seconds left lifted Massachusetts-Lowell past Hartford 85-83 Wednesday night.

The River Hawks overcame a 37-point performance by Pancake Thomas, who shot 10 for 20 from the field and 15 of 17 from the free-throw line. He was one shy of his career high set on Jan. 24.

Thomas made one of two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to tie it at 83. He scored nine of the River Hawks’ final 13 points.

Massachusetts-Lowell (8-14, 4-5 American East) bolted to an 18-6 lead with 12:26 to play in the first half before Hartford (7-17, 2-7) proceeded to outscore the River Hawks 24-19 to make it 37-30 at the half.

Jalen Ross’ 3-point play pulled Hartford to a 61-all tie with 9:46 remaining. Neither team led by more than three points from then on.

Mark Cornelius finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the River Hawks.
