SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A police officer in Salt Lake City has been hospitalized after part of his ear was cut off during an arrest.

KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1S0tpHg ) that the officer was trying to question a man suspected of trespassing at an apartment building at about midnight.

Salt Lake City Police Department Lt. Dave Cracroft says the man didn’t cooperate, so the officer tried to arrest him. But Cracroft says the man hit the officer with an 18-inch iron yard decoration, cutting off half the officer’s ear.

Cracroft says the man will likely face assault charges.

He says the officer was taken to the hospital to have his ear reattached and is expected to recover.
