MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Madison police say a suspect is in custody in the fatal shooting of a woman in a grocery store parking lot.

The man was taken into custody early Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly shot at an officer during a sweep of a shopping area.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain says the officer returned fire, but no one was hurt.

DeSpain tells the Wisconsin State Journal (https://bit.ly/20H5EW1) the shot was fired near a Marshall’s department store. Many stores in the area were on lockdown because of the search for the suspect.

Twenty-four-year-old Caroline Nosal of Stoughton was shot in the head outside the Metro Market on Madison’s east side about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police say Nosal and the 26-year-old man who being sought knew each other, and that he’s a former Metro Market employee.

This story has been corrected to correct age of victim from 25 to 24.
