PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - A new cost estimate for Portsmouth’s long awaited wastewater treatment plant upgrade has put an $83.8 million price tag on the project.

The Portsmouth Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1NOF3x2 ) the City Council unanimously voted Monday to schedule a first reading on a bond authorization of $75 million at its Feb. 16 meeting.

City Manager John Bohenko said that the city may not have to utilize the entire $75 million bond.

Councilors previously authorized putting $10 million toward upgrading Portsmouth’s Pierce Island wastewater treatment facility in August 2013.

The project, now up from just under $80 million, is slated to become the most expensive in the New Hampshire city’s history.

City officials are continuing negotiations with the federal Environmental Protection Agency to extend the completion deadline on the project to September 2020.
