PHOENIX (AP) - A retired Phoenix police officer saved his 84-year-old neighbor from a burning house.

Former officer Christopher Gentis says he saw a home in his Ahwatukee neighborhood on fire and noticed a woman in a window. He says he asked her if she could get out, but she said she couldn’t move.

Gentis says he grabbed the woman under her arms and dragged her through the window.

Phoenix Fire spokeswoman Ardell Deliz called Gentis a “true hero.”

The woman was taken to a hospital in stable condition for smoke inhalation. Gentis was not injured.

The cause the fire was not released.
