HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) - Storms have brought sizable snowfalls to parts of northern Michigan and heavy rain in other parts of the state.

The National Weather Service says Wednesday morning that 10 to 11 inches of snow fell in the last day or so in the western Upper Peninsula, including the Houghton and Ironwood areas. Lower totals were reported in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

The Daily Press of Escanaba reports school closings due to the snow. More snow is in the forecast in northern Michigan for Wednesday.

In western Michigan, The Muskegon Chronicle reports a lightning strike Tuesday night was suspected in a fire that damaged 24 units at Woodland Ridge Apartments in Ottawa County’s Spring Lake Township. No injuries were reported from the fire.

Housing arrangements were being made for residents.
