BETHESDA, Md. (AP) - David Trone says he has fired two staffers and a supervisor for his recently launched congressional campaign after the staffers posed as volunteers for his opponents.

Trone announced in a statement Tuesday that the two staffers “surreptitiously volunteered” for the campaigns of two of his competitors, state Sen. Jamie Raskin and former Marriott executive Kathleen Matthews. Trone says he fired the staffers and a supervisor and called Matthews and Raskin to apologize.

The incident came to light when Matthews’ campaign wrote Trone’s campaign alleging that a member of his staff went to their headquarters seeking to volunteer and tried to enter a senior staff office.

The Democrats are competing in the 8th District primary, seeking the seat currently occupied by Rep. Chris Van Hollen. Trone joined the race last week.
