BANGOR, Maine (AP) - The University of Maine System is awarding its $12 million annual dining services contract to Sodexo, which says it’s focusing on local food in campus cafeterias.

University officials announced the five-year contract on Tuesday.

The university said when it made a call for bids last year that it committed to locally sourcing 20 percent of food served to about 3,000 students on meal plans by 2020. The university cited Sodexo’s commitment to source up to 30 percent locally.

That could translate to more than $2 million in annual sales for local food producers in the state. The university system says local food is anything grown or produced within 175 miles of its campuses.

Sodexo will replace Aramark as the university’s food vendor.
